What Studying Abroad in Costa Rica Taught Me About Smart Travel!

Last summer, I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica and let me tell you—there's no place quite like it! From the jaw-dropping scenery to the vibrant culture, every day felt like an adventure. As exciting as it was, I quickly learned that visiting Costa Rica (or any foreign country) requires more than just packing a suitcase and hopping on a plane.

Through my experience, I realized how essential it is to know what to avoid when visiting new territory. Whether it's respecting the incredible wildlife, navigating rural areas, or adjusting to the laid-back “Pura Vida” lifestyle, I picked up some valuable lessons along the way.

The Wildlife Experience

One of the highlights of my trip was the chance to get up close and personal with Costa Rica’s diverse wildlife. During my studies, I came across all sorts of animals like monkeys, snakes, bullet ants, frogs, and more. But while it was thrilling, I knew I had to maintain a safe distance—for both my safety and theirs. That was one of my first lessons: admire nature from afar.

Adapting to 'Pura Vida'

"Pura Vida" is a way of life in Costa Rica, meaning “pure life” or “simple life,” and it's a phrase you’ll hear everywhere!!! It’s all about living in the moment, embracing the good, and not stressing the small stuff. At first, the slower pace was a bit of an adjustment for me, especially when transportation schedules didn’t always run like clockwork. Over time, I realized how refreshing it is to slow down and enjoy each day. Flexibility is key—Costa Rica taught me that sometimes, plans change, and that’s okay. :)

Nature

Costa Rica’s landscapes are breathtaking, but they can also be unpredictable. Between unexpected rainstorms in the rainforest and powerful ocean currents, you quickly learn to respect the environment. I saw firsthand how quickly weather can turn. So, this is just a reminder of how important it is to be prepared, always listen to local advice, and never underestimate Mother Nature 🌳

My Journey Continues

My time in Costa Rica was eye-opening in more ways than one. While the country’s natural beauty is unmatched, it’s important to travel smart and be mindful of what to avoid. Whether it’s learning local customs, respecting wildlife, or staying flexible when plans change, my experience abroad taught me lessons that I carry with me today. And now, I’m excited to pass on these tips to fellow travelers so they, too, can make the most of their time in this incredible country.
